What is The DK3 Royal System (and how does it work?)

As one of the world’s first wall-mounted furniture systems, the DK3 Royal System® revolutionised storage with elevated design. It maximised space and minimised the need for bulky furniture commonly found in the era, bringing a new, versatile, and stylish approach to living in compact spaces. 

Created back in 1948 by the Danish designer Poul Cadovius, The DK3 Royal System was one of the original systems to move storage off the floor and onto the walls.

It blended functionality with Scandinavian minimalism in a new way, welcoming the philosophy of “living on the walls” into smaller post-war urban homes and living spaces with well-timed innovation.

The product is, in essence, a wall-secured vertical modular structure that uses wooden rails, shelves and cabinets to create customisable configurations for organisation and storage.

The DK3 Royal System shelving consists of customisable wall-mounted rails, wooden shelves, and cabinets, which can be configured in "up to 16 million combination options" cue workspace, media storage, library or only shelving options.

This iconic design was relaunched in 2010 by Danish furniture company DK3 paying homage to its original craftsmanship.

The DK3 Royal System took strong influence from the ideals of Scandinavian functionalism, with Cadovius designing it in line with the principles of utility and practicality in everyday objects.

And too, with a Nordic focus on durability, longevity, natural textures and sustainability, the system is crafted from sustainable, high-quality oak, smoked oak and walnut with beautiful, natural grains and is available in black lacquered finishes.

The design of the system also borrows from Bauhaus principles, where form follows function. Its form is dictated by its purpose — providing storage without unnecessary embellishment.

Additionally, like Bauhaus furniture, the system prioritises both versatility and adaptability through users' customisation of its components.

The system operates as a modular, wall-mounted storage solution which involves some pre-assembled components being slotted into the rails that are secured to the walls.

The solid wood rails and drawers, veneered MDF shelves and cabinets are delivered as fully constructed pieces. The brass or stainless steel hangers and accessories like the screws, brackets and woven fronts come separately but are ready for installation.

Once the rails are securely fitted to the walls, the shelves and cabinets are slotted into place using the brass or stainless-steel hangers.

The rails come in a range of sizes. You can choose the rail length based on your wall height and desired configuration.

TIP: If you may want to expand or adjust the system in the future to opt for longer rails, 200 cm for example.

The Shelves

The shelves come in various depths to fit to your needs, e.g., 24 cm, 30 cm, 60 cm.

• Choose the 24 cm depth for smaller items like books, photo frames, or decorative objects.

• Opt for the 30 cm depth for larger items such as storage boxes, medium-sized electronics, or plants.

• Go for the 60 cm option creating workstations, holding heavier equipment like record players, or serving as a desk surface.

Rail Length

This length is based on your wall space and the configuration you want.

The options are…

• 70 cm - Best suited to more compact configurations, like small shelving or a small workstation.

• 101 cm - Ideal for versatile setups like a library, media storage, or a slightly larger workstation.

• 200 cm - Good for larger configurations, offering more vertical space for extensive shelving or storage.

Cabinets

Select from options like wood, glass or woven sliding doors for the cabinets or drop-front desks.

1. Configuration A

This is a complete system designed for medium-sized spaces with the purpose of storage and display. In Configuration A, you can choose from oiled oak, smoked oak or walnut finishes, as is true for all other configurations too.

2. Configuration B

A sophisticated shelving system with metal accents, Configuration B offers a stylish and functional system for optimum organisation. This configuration can form a shelving unit, a writing desk office setup, or a library with cabinets and drawers

3. Configuration C

Perfect for smaller spaces, Configuration C is a complete system that allows for a focused area like a compact workstation.

4. Configuration D

A large-scale storage and display system, Configuration D is ideal for open-plan living spaces or offices.

5. Configuration E

A large-scale modular storage system that offers flexibility with how you use it. With Configuration E, the user can store everything from books to office supplies in living spaces, studies or dining areas.

6. Configuration F

Ideal for home offices or larger study areas that require expansive storage and a workspace, Configuration F offers large-scale integrated storage and work options.

7. Configuration G

A streamlined shelving system ideal for showcasing books, ornamental pieces and more functional items. Configuration G is medium to large scale, offering significant storage without overwhelming your space.

System Ultra Configurations A, B & C

DK3 offers three additional configurations which are designed for compact spaces or as standalone additional to existing systems.

The Ultra Configurations also provide a more affordable entry point to the DK3 range and are purpose-focused with small-scale display and/or workspace areas

A-Ultra. A minimal shelving component for small-scale display or workspace.

B-Ultra . A complete, compact workstation for smaller offices or creative areas.

C-Ultra . A small shelving unit ideal for focused storage in tight spaces.
