The Bit stool is one of our favourite products, not only for its cool looks, but for the fact that it is made from recycled plastic making it great for the environment too. Designed to cope with the diverse needs of modern life, the Bit collection brings the outdoors in and vice versa. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use all items in the collection are capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -10°C to +50°C.
Crafted from 85-95% industrial and household plastic waste, the Bit collection is the epitome of sustainable design and he circular economy. The stools are manufactured using a rotational molding technique. This process, heating plastic fragments to a 120°C melting point, enables repeated reuse and reheat cycles without compromising the material’s properties, ensuring a circular life cycle for years to come.
So what is the circular economy?
The Ellen MacArthur foundation says that the circular economy is based on three core principles.
- To eliminate waste and pollution
- To circulate products and materials
- To regenerate nature
“In our current economy, we take materials from the Earth, make products from them, and eventually throw them away as waste – the process is linear. In a circular economy, by contrast, we stop waste being produced in the first place.”
Products like the Bit stool, designed by Simon Legald for Normann Copenhagen, is a perfect example of a product designed and manufactured with the environment in mind. Using plastic that originates primarily from post-industrial waste, mixed with smaller portions of household waste, a beautiful and useful product is created that prevents plastic from entering the environment and product that, when no longer useful, can be recycled once more.
